Special protections for garbage bins in Putna Vrancea Natural Park
Data: 4 sept. 2025

In the bear habitat, unprotected trash bins lead to changes in the behavior of wild animals. Bears do not come to garbage because they cannot find food in nature, but because they are opportunistic animals that prefer easily accessible food.

The first two of eight special protections for trash bins have been installed in Putna Vrancea Natural Park. These protections prevent wild animals from searching for food in household waste, reducing the risk of human–bear conflicts and helping to maintain cleanliness.

The bear-proof protection systems will contribute to:

  • Reducing inappropriate behavior of wild animals;
  • Increasing the safety of visitors and local communities;
  • Maintaining a cleaner environment.

The APNPV and ACDB teams will handle the maintenance of these protection systems. Periodically, or whenever necessary, visits will be conducted to check the optimal functioning of the systems and to address any issues.

To document how bears interact with the containers, the ACDB team, together with colleagues from APNPV, will carry out nighttime monitoring using a drone. The aim is to evaluate bear behavior in the vicinity of the containers.
