ACDB and the Putna Vrancea Natural Park Administration step in directly to conserve grasslands and protect butterflies
The Putna Vrancea Natural Park is home to 714 butterfly species, placing it third in the country in terms of diversity. Among them, 7 species are endangered, and their survival depends on the preservation of grasslands – habitats now degrading due to the decline of traditional grazing.
Out of a total of 3,879 hectares of grasslands, around 270 hectares are a priority for conservation. In the absence of domestic animals, these grasslands are increasingly invaded by shrubs and undergo changes in their floral composition, which impacts both the landscape and biodiversity.
To prevent further degradation and support biodiversity, ACDB and the Putna Vrancea Natural Park Administration have launched an annual program of mowing and maintenance for grasslands and hay meadows.
A professional mower adapted to difficult terrain has been purchased, and the park’s team has been trained to operate it. Each year, over 90 hectares of grasslands and hay meadows will be mowed and maintained, invasive shrubs and pioneer tree species will be removed, and grasslands will be gradually restored to an optimal conservation status.
These efforts not only support butterflies and valuable plant species, but also:
- provide food for herbivores through the cut grass;
- create microhabitats for insects and birds using leftover woody material;
- engage local communities through collaboration with landowners.
Through these actions, we are halting grassland degradation, conserving endangered butterfly species, and safeguarding both the natural and cultural landscape of Vrancea.
